As a nurse turned mama, I’ve never been one to rush to the doctor. I always try to think of what I can do at home and when I’ve exhausted my options, then it’s time to head into the office. There’s a running joke with nurses: “We only go to the doctor when we are dying.” So when I purchased my starter kit this spring, I eagerly tried to learn all the holistic remedies, and all the things that all the oils could do. I think that’s pretty impossible – there is just so much to learn, and I’m always learning something new. If you ask a room of 10 oilers what they do to support their sleep, I guarantee you’ll get at least 7 or 8 different answers and more than one answer from each person. There is no right or wrong answer. There is not just one sleep oil, and one stress oil and one blend for tension. There are so many options and you really do have to listen to other’s stories and then try different things for yourself.

I love that I have added oils to my arsenal when it comes to keeping my kids out of the doctor’s office. Last year I would be treating the crud with a sinus rinse. Now we can do a sinus rinse, use an immune blend on our feet, pull out the allergy protocol, use the diffuser, drink all the Ningxia, and allow our bodies to heal itself.

Sometimes when it comes to our kids we don’t really know what to do. If only motherhood came with a manual, amiright? I’m here to tell you to trust that Mama Gut. Assess the situation. If you have any inclination that they should go to the doctor, go! By all means. But talk to your doctor about some home remedies that may relieve the symptoms. Do your research. Figure out what oils work for their symptoms or ask some oily friends what oil has worked for them. I give myself a timeline: “If Junior gets worse, or isn’t better in 12 hours, we are going to the doctor.” By no means am I a doctor. And you don’t have to be a nurse to support your children at home. There is no right or wrong answer. That’s what makes motherhood so hard, isn’t it? We are just thrown into it with no real preparation. Sure you think you’re prepared but we are never prepared! So just do your best, Mama. Whether your child goes to the doctor for every sniffle, or you treat everything you can at home, it’s ok. It. Is. Okay. Whether you roll your baby with lavender only to learn your neighbor swears by lemon for the same ailment, it’s ok. There is no right or wrong answer. Do your research. Empower yourself. Then trust yourself. You’ve got this, Mama.
